I'm willing to believe the 2005 sinkhole closure theory as the theater did indeed appear to be shuttered quite abruptly. Movie posters were still hung on the wall and the letterboard in this picture lists a bunch of movies that came out in 2004, including Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Kicking and Screaming.
