The perforated sheet metal sieve was used to short dry coal based on a size constraint. The finer coal chunks would fall down through the vibrating frame to a conveyor belt below and be transported off to another section of the breaker. The coarser and larger pieces would be broken down again until they fit the size restriction of the sieve. Below is a historical image of the separator.
