A closer look at a pile of Hollerith punched cards. Punched card data recording was invented by Herman Hollerith, serving as a primitive language of sorts that could easily be read by machine. The punched card method of data processing and recording proved successful and Hollerith later went on to found the Tabulating Machine Company in 1896 which eventually became known as IBM.
