Huber Breaker
Blue Coal
One last look at the exterior of the awesome Huber Breaker. The structure to the left was the original breaker building built in 1939. This structure was utilized to wash the coal and then crush it into specific sizes where it would be distributed by rail to various customers. The building to the right was constructed sometime afer the original breaker. It served as a loading facility to distribute the crushed coal via trucks in additional to rail. Operations at the Huber Breaker ceased in 1976 due to declining reliance on coal. The ramifications of this quick decline can be seen through the entire coal belt region of Pennsylvania. Entire cities built specifically around the coal industry have been left to struggle post industrial collapse. Many of the most impressive coal era ruins have since been demolished, however the regions still stands as a depressed treasure trove of industrial heritage if you're willing to dig.
