A set of stairs leading below the labyrinth of pipes and pumps quickly submerged into a blackened abyss deep below the surface of the Earth. A massive flooded subterranean aquarium world of rusted out catwalks, pipe sea-serpents, and carnivores whales was illumined by my flashlight beam as I stood atop a single ladder rung rising just inches above the dark water world beneath.
