The Colon
A steam tunnel within the basement of the former Kirkbride Building at the Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital. A labyrinth of tunnels stretched beneath the wings of the massive hospital building serving as a connection for utilities and as an underground passageway to various other structures on the hospital campus. The tunnel pictured above was constructed entirely from natural rock quarried on site as well as bricks laid in an arch formation to provide stability; the latter of which a rare sight as most utility and steam tunnels are a bit more modern formed instead from poured cement, thus creating a more box like shape. The dirt floor in this tunnel is a sign of the age of the bore; no doubt original to the 1871 groundbreaking and construction of the Kirkbride structure.
