The United States has been so heavily scarred by car culture and planning, that nearly every big city, small town, and soulless suburb in between has been hacked and sliced apart to create a system designed for cars over people. If automobiles could think, they'd no doubt see that the world was designed for them and perhaps start conspiring to rid us pesky flesh and bone humans from their asphalt utopia. We Americans are so obsessed with our automobiles that they're effectively just a tumor growing from our own asses. We've constructed a society where that seemingly benign tumor is increasingly becoming more and more malignant. From doofuses driving lifted pick-up trucks and SUVs so humorously large, they could mow down their own children and only realize it when they returned from Starbucks twenty minutes later. Then you've got the goons whose lives are so unremarkable and dull that the only way they know to garner attention is to drive around city blocks in fart carts that backfire every 10 seconds, much like their brains upon encountering critical thought.
There are times when I wish I could gather all these simpletons and throw them underground. But perhaps that would be counterproductive. Underground is where we should be traveling anyway, a fact that any great city figured out more than a century ago. Unfortunately, our automobile addiction has hollowed out our nation's once great rapid transit systems, many of which now feel more like shopping at a dead mall than a means of mass movement. Yet, in awesome cities all across the country, these systems still prevail; underfunded often, smelling like piss usually, empty sometimes, but perhaps just awaiting a societal shift away from the current obsurdity.
